The story of H.LAB being built, from empty room to first class. Cut to Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap and closing on opening night.

Everything Before the Doors Opened

Long before H.LAB was a studio, it was a room, a lot of unpaid favours and a family doing the work themselves. This video is the whole thing compressed into a minute: the build, the fit-out, the sign going up, friends who are tradies giving up weekends for free, and everyone in the family with tools in hand.

It’s set to Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap, a song my family has loved for years, so the track carries actual meaning rather than being picked off a trending list.

Structure

The edit moves chronologically, which lets the payoff build on its own. Empty space becomes a fit-out, a fit-out becomes a finished studio, the sign goes on the wall, and then the doors open and the room fills with people. The first class plays out as the song lifts.

It ends on the moment that made the video worth making: my family standing on the studio floor after the first class, thanking everyone who turned up, saying the point of all of it is to build a real community and have a crack. The room applauds, and the video cuts there.

The Result

The post drew 304 likes, 20 comments, 15 shares and 3 reposts. The shares are the number that matters most, because it means people sent it to someone else rather than just liking it, which is exactly what you want from a story about a place opening in your town.

It also gave the studio something permanent: the only complete record of how H.LAB was built, told by the people who built it.
